Sanjay Barve is new Mumbai Commissioner of Police

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Thursday appointed Sanjay Barve as Mumbai’s new Commissioner of Police (CP) and the former Mumbai CP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state.

Barve was previously posted as the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and is likely to be succeeded by Parambir Singh in the ACB. Barve was earlier considered a front-runner for the post of Mumbai CP last year, but was appointed as Director General of Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.

CP Barve, a 1987 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is Mumbai’s 42nd CP and had been posted in the city at various junctures in his police career. Barve said, “I am not new to Mumbai police, neither is Mumbai police new to me,. He said, it is time to focus on cyber crimes.

“Our aim is to maintain law and order situation and concentrate more on the cyber and economic offences. Mumbai police has always been up to to the citizens expectations and will continue to be so in the future, in a more effective manner,” he said.

He also confirmed the police have increased security in the city due to the development on India’s borders. Coordination will all central agencies is carried out on regular basis. Meanwhile, senior IPS officers, Parambir Singh, K Venkatesham, Vivek Phansalkar and Rashmi Shukla were considered as the contenders for the post of CP.

Former Mumbai CP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, a 1985 batch IPS officer, took charge from DGP Dattatray Padsalgikar, whose term ended on Thursday. Padsalgikar was to retire on August 31, last year but was given an extension of three months till November 30. However, on December 1, last year, he was granted another three-month extension the deadline which culminated on Thursday.
