Ravindra Phatak of Sena defeats NCP’s Vasant Davkhare in Council elections

Mumbai: Shiv Sena’s Ravindra Phatak defeated deputy chairman and four-time member of the state Legisaltive Council Vasant Davkhare here on Monday in the elections held for the Thane local bodies’ constituency.

This comes as a shocker for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as one of its strongest leaders, who was always known for his cross-party links, was defeated.

Davkhare had won four consecutive elections from the same constituency. Phatak, who was able to win 601 of 1060 votes, defeated Davkhare by what can be considered as a huge margin of 151 votes.

With Phatak’s victory, it would now be interesting to watch the proceedings of the Upper House of state Legislative Council where former chief minister Narayan Rane would be responsible to lead Congress offensive, while his one-time close confident Phatak will be in the treasury benches.

Phatak’s victory was fairly anticipated as the BJP-Shiv Sena controlled the major part of the electorate. Davkhare’s cross party links, which have fetched him the seat for four consecutive terms, appear to have not worked for him.

Phatak bagged 601 votes out of total valid voted cast whereas Davkhare secured 450 votes. Out of total 1060 electors, 1057 voters cast their votes. Six votes are invalid.

According to Shiv Sena insider, Phatak was assured by party chief to give him MLC seat as he distanced himself from Rane.

“EknathShinde, guardian minister of Thane, played an important role to bring Phatak in Shiv Sena and also had responsibility to win MLC election to fulfill the words given to Phatak,” said the sources.
