Mumbai : An enquiry has been initiated into the Rs 40 crore project for construction of two new cement roads in K-West ward. The BMC had awarded the contract to one R K Construction Company.
Following a written complaint, lodged by Congress group leader in BMC, Devendra Amberkar, on Wednesday, regarding the sub-standard quality material being used by the contactor in the work, Additional Municipal Commissioner (AMC), S V R Srinivas, has launched an enquiry.
Amberkar visited the RTO Road from Achutrao Patwardhan Junction up to RTO Office and Captain Sawant Marg from S V Road up to Veera Desai Marg in K-West ward on Wednesday at 11 am.
Speaking to FPJ, Amberkar said, “When the road project started, a large area was dug up resulting in huge quantity of mud and stones. Now, the same material is being used by the contractor to complete the project”, he alleged and added, “It is a serious issue and needs to be investigated with regard to its quality.”
No BMC staff or third-party quality control agency has been monitoring the project, the Congress group leader added. In his complaint, Amberkar has also requested the AMC to initiate strict action against the concerned BMC staff, including the Executive Engineer, the Assistant Engineer and the sub-engineer for neglecting their duties besides their immediate transfer from the Road Department.
The cementing work for the RTO Road and Captain Sawant Marg has been going on for the last one month.
According to Amberkar’s written complaint, (a copy of which is available with FPJ) proper and sufficient barricading has not been provided at the site; excavation has not been done up to the sewerage drain, instead the bay portion has been excavated due to which the sub-grade materials could not be laid and compacted homogeneously.
The surplus excavated material has been stacked on the bay portion because of which proper rolling and compaction has not been carried out. After excavation and compaction, GSB and wet mix should be laid in layers by using paver machines in the required thickness and the same should be compacted properly, the complaint further stated. AMC Srinivas told FPJ, “I will ask the concerned officer to initiate an inquiry into the matter immediately.”
