Such a move by colleges despite lack of infrastructure will be grave injustice to students, says Minister
Mumbai : Higher and Technical Education Minister Ravindra Waikar on Tuesday directed the University of Mumbai to roll back its Management Council’s decision of blanket fee hike in all city colleges despite lack of basic education infrastructure.
Earlier last week, the Management Council of the University of Mumbai decided to increase the student fees in all colleges by 10 per cent. The decision was applicable from the next academic year 2015-16. Several Management Council members had objected to the status of meeting as well as the decision taken in the meeting.
Senate member Neelima Bhurke who was present at the meeting in the chamber of Higher Education Minister on Tuesday objected to the status of Management Council meeting saying that the meeting cannot be official as it had no quorum. She said, “Only two out of total 15 members were present at the meeting so the outcome of this meeting can’t be official.”
Minister Waikar directed the authorities to roll back the decision of blanket fee in all colleges as the decision is prima facie not judicious. He said, “It is not appropriate to let all colleges hike their fees, if the college does not have basic education infrastructure to facilitate students. It is injustice with students.”
He directed the university to form a committee that will scrutinise all proposals of fee hike received from colleges. The committee will visit the colleges and make audit of education facilities provided to the students. On the basic of infrastructure and facilities, the committee will take decision whether to allow the college to increase the fee or not.
