Mumbai: In a novel protest, DP sheets were torn and released in the Mithi river in a coffin on Friday. The protest was against the “errors” in the city’s revised final draft DP 2034.
More than 200 members of Watchdog Foundation, Save Our Land, Bombay East Indian Association, Sahar Citizens Forum, Guardians United, United Social Welfare Association, Bombay Indigenous Peoples Association, Mobai Mulvasi Sanghatana, St Blaise Civic and Political Cell, Civic and Political Cell Chuim Church and Marol Citizens Forum were a part of it.
After a series of presentations made against the DP and giving suggestions and objections, the MCGM has been making repetitive mistakes and has been presenting the defective DP in front of Mumbaikars. Godfrey Pimenta, member of Watchdog Foundation said, “The MCGM has been creating problems rather than solving them. The development of NDZ, Salt Pan Lands, Aarey, no marking of many Gaothans, Koliwadas and Adivasi padas, no marking of uniform buffer zone for the 4 rivers of Mumbai, improper marks of many historical buildings and landmarks in the City.”
“We have been holding protests from the past many months due to the range of issues which are affecting the city. The presentations were held at Shivaji Park Mahim, Sahar, Marol, Kurla, Vikhroli, Goregaon, Jogeshwari, Malvani.
Since the MCGM administration is adamant about going ahead with faulty and non-responsive Development Plan, we had planned a novel protest,” added Pimenta.
The state government had taken a call last year to scrap the DP after Mumbaikars, activists and urban planners pointed out errors in it.
