Mumbai: Road works and development plans across the city have turned commuting into a nightmare. Daily commuters and pedestrians are finding it difficult to cope with slow moving traffic and crowded lanes owing to road works in the city. Commuters claim that while they welcome the civic authorities’ efforts to improve the city’s infrastructure, the authorities should also find a way to ensure that there is no inconvenience to commuters in any way.

Expressing her plight, Krishna Jobanputra, a resident of Mulund said, “We are facing huge problems owing to road works development going in our area. It’s been more than two weeks that we have been living with this issue and it is becoming impossible with each passing day. The major work of digging up of roads is going on at SL Road, NS Road, near station and market area wherein these areas are majorly crowded throughout the day. We find it difficult to walk because of the constant work going on especially during the peak hours in the morning and evening.”

Another commuter, Mamta Bhandari from Bhandup said, “The road work is going on at L B S Marg in Bhandup west. It is causing inconvenience to us, as it is difficult to walk. This leads to traffic jam in this area and we have to wait for long hours in the traffic. This gives rise to unnecessary noise pollution as everyone is in a rush to reach their destinations. I don’t know when we will be free of this issue.”

Ronak Bid who travels regularly to Bhandup and Mulund for business purpose says, “Every year we face the same issue as the civic authorities take up the road work and development work. But at the end of the day, it is we who suffer and our travel is inconvenienced.”

Sulaksha Poojary, a Ghatkopar resident said, “These road works are taking a toll on us. There is so much traffic during the day that it takes double the time for us to reach our destination. Every other day, the civic authorities dig up the roads with an aim of giving us relief, but it is just the other way round.”
