Last year, police conducted DNA tests on all suspects but had failed to nab the offender; victim was a15-yr-old physically and mentally challenged girl

Mumbai : A 48 year old man was arrested by the Malwani police for taking advantage of a 15 year old mentally challenged and polio affected girl by raping her.

The incident is said to have came to light in September last year, when the victim’s mother Shamimbi, noticed that the girl had not had her periods since the past three months and informed the girl’s father. She then took her daughter to a local clinic in Malad on September 24, 2012 to get her daughter checked and it was confirmed that the girl was five months pregnant. The girl was unable to give her parents a satisfactory reply on who was responsible for her getting pregnant because of her mental illness. Her parents then approached the police who at the time registered a case against an unknown person under IPC section 376(punishment for rape). The Malwani police also said that the girl was known to wander around in the vicinity and would often go to the hotels in the area and watch TV there, and the accused may have taken advantage of this.
The Malwani police started their investigations and began looking for people who knew the girl and would speak to the girl on a daily basis. The cops then detained six suspects and conducted DNA tests on them. The six detained were Shatrugan Pandey (45), Khurshid alias Mulla Ahmed Quereshi(42), Siraj Abdul Khan (48), Imran Ismail Sayed(25), Vinod Palkar (32) and Haider Hussain Azizulla Khan (33). The DNA samples were the sent to the Kalina Forensic lab in Santacruz.
However, the major breakthrough in the case came about three days ago when the blood samples of the baby boy who was born in January this year and matched that of Siraj Abdul Khan, an auto driver by profession. The police arrested Khan on Sunday and have remanded him to police custody till October 29th. Khan has been booked under sections 3,4,5,6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
