An HC order on installing yellow lights at Marine Drive states that sodium vapour lights may be used if non-white LED lights fail to sufficiently illuminate the area

Mumbai : In spite of the decision to install yellow LED lights on Marine Drive, Queen’s Necklace may see the installation of sodium vapour lamps again.

After the High Court order directing the BMC to install yellow LED lights on the iconic Marine Drive to restore the golden glow of the place, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta also directed the company in charge to change the white lights ‘at the earliest’.

However, a lesser known fact about the High Court order is that it states that sodium vapour lights may return to Marine Drive if non-white LED lights fail to sufficiently illuminate the area.

The order reads that the BMC may replace white LEDss with non-white LEDs across a small stretch of Marine Drive and get the illumination evaluated by the chairman of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. If the installed non-white LEDs do not give sufficient illumination, sodium vapour bulbs will be restored along Queen’s Necklace.

The BMC spokesperson said, “An earlier order directed us to complete the installation of yellow lights by August 15. However, the order that came from the High Court last week directs us to restore the golden glow of Marine Drive ‘at the earliest’ with Non-white LEDs.” He said that this process may take up to a month.
