MUMBAI: The BMC will now charge private companies for the utility cables it will lay underground. These include electric, gas and optical fibre cables. Through this, the BMC plans to raise Rs 200 crore annually. The proposal will be submitted before the standing committee which will then discuss the matter. About 28 companies carry out the work of laying underground utility cables. Until now, the BMC used to recover only charges accrued while carrying out the digging, but now on, it will charge the company at the rate of Rs 100 per metre per year.    (FPJ)
