Panvel, June 14: While residents under the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been opposing the dual and retrospective property tax, the civic body has received an overwhelming response from citizens. The civic chief says that the slab of tax is much lower than nearby corporations and requested everyone to pay on time.

This is the first time that the civic body is collecting property tax since its inception in 2016. Earlier, residents were paying property tax to gram panchayat and service tax to CIDCO.

However, there are residents who are opposing the tax collection. They say that the proposal to collect the tax was passed in the civic general body in 2019. But the civic body is collecting taxes since it came into existence in 2016. They are opposing retrospective tax collection. In addition, a few areas under the PMC pay service charges for various facilities to CIDCO. Now, they say why do they pay multiple taxes. “If we are paying property tax, the service charge should not be collected from us,” said a resident Suyash Mhatre, a sector 10 in Kharghar resident.

However, the civic body went ahead with the tax collection and also launched an online payment option for paying property tax. The civic body had even offered a 5 percent rebate for paying till March 15 and an additional 2 percent for making the payment online.

Despite opposition, the civic body has collected a good amount of property tax. Sudhakar Deshmukh, the municipal commissioner of PMC says that they have received a good response from citizens. “The corporation received Rs. 75 lakh property tax online in a single day. Also, from day one of starting the recovery of newly assessed properties, more than Rs 1 crore has been collected,” said Deshmukh.

He added that the tax structure of PMC is really reasonable and comparatively lower than all nearby corporations. “There is no law to escape any property from paying the property tax to the local body. Hence, no chance of further more reduction or another benefit,” said Deshmukh.

He further added that whatever requests from people representatives, organisations, NGOs, individual tax payers received have been positively considered and possible benefit has already been given to tax payers. “Hence any further demand or protest against this taxation process will yield nothing,” said Deshmukh.
