Mumbai : The State government has decided to make a new law to seize properties of government officers against whom corruption charges are proved.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis, on Wednesday, announced in the Legislative Council that there is a rule in other states to seize the property of government officers against whom corruption charges are proved. “Taking a cue from these states, Maharashtra government is has decided to enact a law that will empower it to seize properties of such corrupt government officials. The draft of the law has been prepared and sent to the home department for consideration and it will be tabled in winter session of the state Legislature,” Fadanvis said.
During the Question Hour, NCP MLC Prakash Binsale had raised a question asking the government what action it initiated against government officials who have been accused of corruption.
Replying to the question, CM said, “The new law will give rights to the government to seize properties of such government officials. If not found guilty, properties will be handed back to the officers,” Fadnavis said.
He also pointed out that when cases of corruption reach before the courts, it takes years for the final judgement and in the meantime accused manage to get stay orders on action against them. Now, all the government officers will have to declare their assets. It was mandatory only for officers but the government has now issued a GR which has made it compulsory for all government officials, including employees of Zilla Parishads and municipal corporations to declare their assets, he added.
