Mumbai : Mumbai’s Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Maria at a press briefing on Wednesday gave the details of progress made in the various cases being investigated by the Mumbai police.

With regards to the case of MP Kirit Somaiya, who had allegedly hit a police inspector S R Munde at the Navghar police station in Mulund, Maria has ordered an enquiry as to why a complaint wasn’t registered against Somaiya on the day the assault happened. A case was registered against the MP on August 25, four days after the incident.

A Preliminary Enquiry (PE) has been set up by the Mumbai police against Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sunil Paraskar after the case of alleged molestation and rape of a 26-year-old model against him. The PE is being done by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Admin), Vivek Phansalkar. “It has been assigned to him and not the Joint CP of Crime, Sadanand Date to avoid bias, as Date is the supervisory officer in the case against Paraskar,” Maria said. The PE will do a thorough study of the case, on the basis of which a Departmental Enquiry will be set up against Paraskar by the Director General’s office.

After firing incident at bungalow of Bollywood producer Karim Morani in Juhu allegedly by Ravi Pujari on Saturday August 23, the Mumbai police has beefed up the security of all the people who have been contacted by Pujari in the last three years have been given enhanced police protection. Maria said that after the incident, one non-Bollywood personality has been contacted by the gangster through Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP). The Mumbai police has come up with a new register called the ‘Sexual Offenders’ Register’ where the police have kept a record of all serious sexual offenders. These people will be regularly rounded up by the police as a preventive measure against sexual offences. During the upcoming Ganpati festival too, these people will be arrested by the police and kept in the lock-up.
