MUMBAI: Raithatha family who lives on the ground floor apartment in Malad’s Evershine Nagar had a narrow escape after a portion of their ceiling slab collapsed on Friday at around 10:30 am. Bhavin Raithatha (29) elder son of the family said besides their building there are 14 other buildings in the same locality which are more than 30 years old and in poor condition. However, due to opposition from a few residents the redevelopment of all buildings have remained only on papers. "There are 258 families living in these buildings endangering their lives since few people are creating hurdles in the redevelopment.
If any tragedy occurs who should be held responsible. Moreover, the BMC has already declared these buildings dangerous (C-1 category — meaning the buildings need to be vacated and pulled down)," remarked Raithatha. After Friday's mishap Malad BMC ward officer has sent notices to all 258 tenants asking them to vacate their homes immediately.
Moreover, in the notice issued, BMC has cleared stated, “The construction is more than 30 years old as reported in the building structural audit report. The serviceable life of structure has exhausted due to lack of regular maintenance. In view of the fact, if any mishap occurs this office will not be held responsible.” Post this incident the entire building has been vacated now. Since the mishap occurred in Raithatha family they are now taking shelter in one of their relatives house in Kandivali.
