Mumbai : The Mumbai Police are currently planning on initiating awareness programmes among the slum-dwellers in various parts of Wadala following three incidents of sexual assaults on minors that have been registered with the Wadala TT police station over the last few months. The latest incident took place on Thursday when a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped.
“We are working with the Child Welfare Committee to create and execute notable awareness programmes as an attempt to pull down the crime rate against women especially in that area,” said Ashok Dudhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IV.
There awareness programmes are being launched with an attempt to reduce the number of crimes against women, especially minors, that are on a rise in the recent months.
The Mumbai Police are working on attempts to reach to the slum and road-dwellers where these cases tend to take place more often.
On Thursday, the nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a worker with a gold jewelry unit, in a slum in Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Sion.
The arrested accused was a worker in Zaveri Bazar and had been working with three other men in a slum three feet away from where the girl lived.
At 11 pm, the accused went to the girl’s house, where she was asleep with her younger sister and allegedly raped her.
The nine-year-old narrated the incident to her father who returned home later that night. Her father then registered a complaint with the Wadala TT police at 3 am on Friday.
The accused allegedly fled from the spot after raping the girl and escaped to Zaveri Bazar.
The Wadala TT police sent a team to Zaveri Bazar and nabbed him.
Earlier, an eight-year-old girl was raped by a 19-year-old garage worker on October 26 in Shanti Nagar, Wadala. The alleged accused managed to escape.
However, he was nabbed earlier this month after he attempted to rape another eight-year-old at the same spot where he had raped the other minor earlier.
His attempt to rape the second minor had been foiled by alert guards at the spot who surrounded the 19-year-old and questioned him about the girl before they called the police.
The Wadala TT police then arrested the accused and charged him in both the cases.
