New Delhi: Kalyan’s Shiv Sena MP Eknath Shinde on Tuesday called for developing the untapped potential of Kalyan-Thane-Mumbai waterway to decongest the existing load on Railways and roads.
Making a special mention in the Lok Sabha, he pointed out that some four lakh commuters travel from Kalyan to Mumbai every day and Mumbai already has huge jetties that can handle the waterway traffic. Navi Mumbai also has some jetties while the Maritime Board has already conducted a survey to establish jetties at Talavali, Gothivali, Vashi and Koparkhairne.
He said Kalyan can be developed as a commuter hub for waterways considering the vast coastline connecting it to Thane and Mumbai. He said the rural areas connected with Kalyan will be hugely benefited due to waterways as their produce can reach faster to Mumbai markets. —Our Bureau
