Mumbai: The demolition of the historic Ambedkar Bhavan has led to a controversy as the former IAS officer and State Information Commisisoner Ratnakar Gaikwad and an Advisor to the People’s Improvement Trust (PIT) has alleged that the Ambedkar brothers are known for their ‘Gundagiri’.
The demolition of the 72-year-old structure was carried at around 2 am on Saturday in the presence of PIT members including the police personnel. However, the advisor of the PIT, Ratnakar Gaikwad, made a statement on Tuesday saying, “The Ambedkar brothers are known for ‘Gundagiri’ and the structure was demolished because it was in the dilapidated condition.”
“A new construction of a grand of 17 storey building will start soon. It will be recognised as the central headquarters for weaker sections as desired by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,” added Gaikwad.
Meanwhile, the grandsons of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Prakash and Anandraj Ambedkar, have filed an FIR in the Bhoiwada police station against Ratnakar Gaikwad and Madhukar Kamble, trustee of the PIT, on Saturday. The Ambedkar family has also warned of state-wide agitation if no action is taken against the people involved in this demolition process.
[alert type=”e.g. warning, danger, success, info” title=””]At least 1000 people took to the street near Dadar TT Circle and vandalised 15 shops and windows of buses besides raising voice against the demolition of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s memorial. The owners had kept their shop opened despite the protestors had warned them about the demonstration. At least 15 shops including a wine shop were vandalised. The protestors were also seen lifting liquors from the shop. But, no arrest was made in the incident. The protest march was carried in areas including Dadar, Hindmata, Bhoiwada, etc causing all arterial roads to witness severe traffic snarl. But the Mumbai Police said, “The situation in these areas is normal and all the shops are open.” The row ensued after the structure was demolished on Saturday reportedly sans the consent of DrBabasahebAmbedkar’s grandson Prakash who accused the People’s Improvement Trust and civic body of trying to commercialise the place in the guise of making AmbedkarBhavan.[/alert]
