In order to implement the single-use plastic ban effectively, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has associated with social organisations to spread awareness about the single-use plastic ban. The civic body held a meeting with Robin Hood Army, Create Together Foundation and Citizens Forum to discuss the awareness programme.
The notification on the plastic ban was issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in which production, import, storage, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastics were banned from July 1, 2022, as per the revised Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016.
A senior PMC official said that the civic body will seek the help of various NGOs to create awareness among the people about the ban on single-use plastic. “Discussions were held regarding the need to sensitize the citizens about the ban on plastics. Teams are formed at ward levels and they are working under the guidance of the sanitary inspectors,” said the official.
The civic body will collect a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first offence, Rs 10,000 for the second offence and Rs 25,000 for the third offence and three months imprisonment.
