Mumbai : The Opposition parties have opposed the appointment of new Commissioner of Police, Rakesh Maria, on the ground that he was born and brought up in Mumbai and has taken charge of the city at the time of general elections.

Anticipating trouble, a cautious Home Minister R R Patil wrote to the State Election Commissioner seeking his permission for the appointment. Though the letter has been forwarded to the State Election Commissioner, he is yet to take a decision regarding the same.

“The SEC had asked us for some more details after I informed him. We had asked the Home Minister and the Additional Chief Secretary to respond and their response has been forwarded to the Commissioner. Now, we are awaiting his decision, I can’t comment on that,” said Nitin Gadre, CEO, State Election Commission.

As per the norm, the selection of an officer for the post of city commissioner must not be from his birth place.
