Mumbai :  The relative of a patient assaulted a 21-year-old nursing intern at BYL Nair Hospital on Thursday last week in the lift of the hospital building.

The nurse was molested when the lift stopped for five minutes and the lights went off.

“She was alone in the lift with the assailant when the incident took place. The electricity went off on the third floor for 3 to 5 minutes when the incident took place. He groped her all over and clasped her mouth with the other hand as soon as the lift stopped,” said a nurse from Nair Hospital.

The man got down on the fourth floor. The intern quietly noted the name and bed number of the patient who was the relative of the accused. She later informed the nursing association and the authorities of the incident.

The nurses are upset at the unsatisfactory security arrangements at Nair Hospital. “The lifts do not have guards. Patients come to the hospital from all over the country. We have to often work late at nights. After this incident we feel extremely unsafe and have demanded better security,” said another nurse at the hospital.

The nurses, however, mentioned that the authorities had responded appropriately to the lift incident. The authorities had even persuaded the intern to submit a written complaint, which led to the molester being nabbed, said Dr Ramesh Bharmal.

Soon after the incident Dr Bharmal also promised to tighten the security. “We have also asked for over 271 CCTV cameras. They will be installed in the lifts as well,” said the doctor.
