Mumbai : On February 25, Railway commuters will face difficulty in tracing their respective stationmasters who are otherwise ensconced in their cubicles dressed in their iconic white uniforms. Stationmasters from all over India will come to work on February 25 without uniform in protest against the rigorous working hours and their pending demands at the finance ministry.
The All India Stationmasters Association will be holding this protest to make themselves heard. Mumbai Divisional Secretary, Mithelesh Jha said, “Several posts are lying vacant and we are made to bear the brunt as no new recruitments have been made for long. We are overworked which takes a huge toll on our health. Several officers have been de-categorised on medical grounds.”
Another stationmaster added, “We will not suspend work or cause inconvenience to commuters or to the authorities but the idea is to make our presence felt.”
The stationmasters also complained of not only lack of staff but also lack of licensed porters. They are demanding porters and hamals who would be used for quick action in cases of accidents.
Asangaon stationmaster, Mathur Kumar added, “It will be a 24-hour protest as we do not intend to cause inconvenience to the passengers.”
