Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) might soon set up CCTV cameras along the nullahs of Mumbai, especially the ones where de-silting work is ongoing.

Sandeep Deshpande, MNS corporator along with Congress Corporator Pravin Cheda and Samajwadi Party Corporator Rais Sheikh have asked the civic body to install CCTV cameras on nullahs of the city in order to keep track of the progress of nullah cleaning work.

Speaking to the standing committee of the BMC on Friday, Deshpande said, “If the BMC is unwilling to spend money on the CCTV cameras, we will pay money out of our pockets and get it done overnight.”

Stressing on the urgency of the issue, Devendra Amberkar, Leader of the opposition said, “The civic body is not paying enough attention to the work, which gives the contractors scope for corruption.” He pointed out that there is no count of how much silt is removed, as there are no weighing machines on the field. The silt is taken to the dumping ground and then weighed.

Amberkar alleged that contractors sometimes acquire construction debris from elsewhere and pass them off as silt to extort money from the civic body.
