Mumbai : It seems that ladies of both the Congress and the BJP have taken the onus on themselves to take the fight ahead that erupted after senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat made ‘objectionable’ comments on former television actress and Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani.

While the women’s wing chief of Mumbai BJP Shalaka Salvi has threatened to disrupt Kamat’s meetings, their counterpart in city Congress has dared them to do so. “We challenge the BJP Mahila Morcha to disrupt a single meeting of Kamat,” a statement issued by Mahila Congress said.

Moreover, it warned that “None of their (BJP) senior leaders will be able to move around the city as the Mahila wing of Congress will gherao them.”

The unit also asked why the BJP supporters didn’t care to raise their voice when Kamat had demanded criminal action against Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, who are very senior to Irani.

During a function in Rajasthan a few days ago, Kamat had referred to Irani as a “poncha lagane waali” while questioning her credentials to hold the charge of the education portfolio.

“Kamat has clearly stated that his comments did not degrade Irani and he had only questioned her educational qualifications to hold the important portfolio of HRD and made a passing reference to her working at McDonald’s as a waitress which is as per Irani’s own admission,” the statement read. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women too has jumped into the fray and has issued a suo motu notice to Kamat to explain within a week his alleged offensive remarks.
