Chaos reigns in Mumbai, India, where goats on mounds of construction debris and incredible tangles of electrical wires in residential areas are par for the course. |

Mumbai : To prevent the accumulation of construction debris on the streets of the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a service called Debris and Call, in which citizens can call and ask for construction debris to be collected and systematically disposed of.

In a notification dated August 1, the BMC said that construction debris that are carelessly disposed of on the streets get in the way of pedestrians and smooth vehicular movement. These also contain sharp and dangerous objects that pose a threat to people walking close to them.

In order to minimize the resulting hazard and to ensure safe and systematic disposal, the BMC has appointed an agency that will function in 24 wards of Mumbai and is just a phone call away. This service will be provided by the civic body at subsidised rates.

A BMC spokesperson said, “Usually, people do not dispose of debris properly and leave them lying on the streets around the construction site because of the cost factor involved in transporting them to a dumping ground. We are making this facility available at a cheaper rate. The cost will have to be borne by the individual but our service is available at hand.”

This apart, the BMC will also collect biodegradable waste from wards under the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ so that the same does not mix with other recyclable waste.

Citizens can get contact details from their local ward office for the collection of debris. They can also call the BMC Swachh Bharat Abhiyan cell for collection of wet waste at 022-24944372.
