Mumbai  : Commuters on Central Railway (CR) can heave a sigh of relief as well maintained trains are all set to start rolling out from the newly inaugurated Sanpada workshop. The first phase of the workshop with three pit lines and a capacity to maintain 24 coaches each month has been thrown open.

The first train maintained at the newly inaugurated workshop is that running on Direct Current (DC) which was put in to service on from Monday.

The trains completed a couple of services before it was pulled out. The workshop until December is expected to maintain one train each month and will be able to extend its capacity to two trains which 12-car each by March 2016.

Until now, maintenance of all the Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains was carried out at Matunga workshop. Matunga workshop not only catered to the EMU trains but also the long distance coaches.

A senior official from Central Railway (CR) said, “Matunga workshop was expected to deliver 150 coaches each month but it could barely complete 8o to 85 coaches.

The trains which were delayed for their POH have to undergo maintenance under a special schedule where in more expense were incurred.”

The work for converting Sanpada which was until now a carshed was started in 2012. “It is the only car-shed where there was ample of space available for converting it into a workshop,” added the official.
