Mumbai : Days after announcing Rs 5 fare hike on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor, the operators of the line have deferred the implementation of the fare revision till December 17 citing the impending High Court hearing. Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) had proposed a hike of maximum fare by Rs 5 per trip that was to come into effect from December 1.

MMOPL, in a statement, said the revision has been deferred as the Bombay High Court, which is hearing the petition against the proposed fare hikes by the company, has scheduled the hearing for December 17.

The company had cited an annual loss of Rs 300 crore for the hike in fares for the 11.4-km Metro route. The company had proposed new fare slabs along with a maximum hike of Rs 5. Instead of the earlier slabs of Rs 10, 20, 30 and 40, the new structure will have five slabs of Rs 10, 20, 25, 35 and 45.

The fare slabs per trip for the return journey token category have been similarly revised from Rs 10, 15, 25 and 30 earlier to Rs 10, 20, 22.50, 30 and 35 now.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament from Mumbai North-East on Monday raised the issue of Mumbai Metro in the Lok Sabha. He opposed the MMOPL’s proposed fare hike till the CAG audit of the project is completed.

“I urged the Union Ministry of Urban Development to reject the hike and appoint a fresh fare fixation committee. I also expressed my concern over cost inflation by private operators of Metro,” Somaiya said.
