Mumbai : An RTI query has revealed that successive chief ministers of Maharashtra have not held a single meeting of the Mithi River Development and Protection Authority (MRDPA) in the past five years. Overflowing of the Mithi river had led to the loss of lives in the deluge in the city in July 2005 and MRDPA, under the chairmanship of the chief minister, was constituted to discuss matters concerning the River, conserve it, restore it and, more importantly, avoid flooding in the future.

According to RTI activist Anil Galgali, the MRDPA was set up on August 19, 2005. “Over the past five years, three successive CMs — Ashok Chavan, Prithviraj Chavan and Devendra Fadnavis — have not held a single meeting of the authority on the development plan for Mithi River,” the RTI reply stated.

The river, which has become an extended drainage system of the city, was chiefly to blame for the deluge as it could not divert excess rainwater out into the sea due to silt and garbage.

The MRDPA, which was created to ensure that there is no repeat of the same, surprisingly, met only six times since its constitution in 2005. “In the last 10 years, a total of six meetings were held since 2005. Two meetings were held in 2005, and a meeting was held every year between 2006 and 2010. In the past five years since 2011 to 2015, CMs, namely Ashok Chavan, Prithviraj Chavan and currently Devendra Fadnavis, have not held a single meeting till date,” the information in the RTI reply stated.
