Navi Mumbai : The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has geared up to clean-up all drains and nullahs under its jurisdiction as a part of pre-monsoon work. As per instructions of the Nirvachan Sadan, civic body has decided not to engage any official who is still on election duty.

With this partial relaxation order from the Election Commission of India, the NMMC has put cleaning-up of nullahs and drains on top gear. The cleaning-up natural nullahs will ensure smooth flow of the water during the rains. After a review meeting, Mayor Sagar Naik has instructed concerned officials to complete the clean-up work on war-footing basis. Having said that the entire process is unlikely to be a smooth one because lukewarm response from contractors who are familiar with such works.

Tendering was done twice but contractors did not show any response. Hence, the civic body is planning to invite fresh tender as per the DSR manual of the Public Works Department. The DSR code is the government rate for calculating work. The work of some nullahs was yet to be taken up, an official from NMMC said.

The entire work is estimated at about Rs 6.90 crore. The cleaning up for drains will cost Rs 4.6 crore and nullahs Rs 2.84 crore respectively. About 74.2 km of natural nullah and 563.2 km of gutters and drains will be cleaned up.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) B. Rajale has already held a meeting with concerned officials and a decision is expected shortly.
