Mumbai : A new suspect has emerged in the Esther Anuhya case. The focus is not as much on the man seen with Esther in the CCTV footage, but on Hemant Bhaskar, a close friend of Esther from her engineering college days in Machilipattinam. Bhaskar was in the same train as Esther, but in a different bogie.

The Kurla railway police picked up Bhaskar from Vijaywada on Friday and handed him over to the Mumbai police on Saturday.

The mobile calls made from Esther’s cell show that she had been speaking with him for 39 hours in the month of December. There is also a speculation that Esther was talking to Bhaskar when she was seen using her phone in the CCTV footage. He is claiming that he boarded the train as he wanted to go to Shirdi, but he was not able to justify why he was going to Shirdi via Mumbai.

The police believe that Esther had a third phone other than the two seized by the police. It is likely that her parents did not know about this phone.

A team from Mumbai police headed by Inspector Ashok Phaple reached Machilipattanam on Monday and questioned some locals along with Esther’s parents. The team, comprising three police personnel from Kanjurmarg police station, showed photographs of the suspects to some people as part of their in investigation.

“They asked me whether I had any enemies,” Said S J S Prasad, Esther’s father. “I asked them questions about the investigation, but they did not reveal anything,” he added.
