Mumbai : The Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy organised an air display for differently-abled children and school students at Naval Air Station, INS Shikra as part of ‘Navy Week 2015’ celebrations that carries on for four days staring from Monday.
On Monday, the static display of navy choppers — including Chetak, Seaking and Kamov — was carried out for differently-abled children with a demonstration of the role and capabilities of each chopper.
For two days, Monday and Tuesday, the air display is dedicated to differently-abled students and on November 18 and 19, it will be dedicated for school children at INS Shikra, located in Colaba, which provides basing facilities and operational support to naval and Coast Guard choppers, including ship-borne flights of the western fleet.
A naval official said, “A large number of children visited today (Monday), and are scheduled to visit the air station over the next three days, and utilised the opportunity to understand and appreciate the services being rendered by the air arm of the Indian Navy. This thrilling and motivating exposure to the helicopters and an insight into naval life would indeed leave an imprint on both the hearts and minds of the visiting children.”
Many urgent search and rescue operations undertaken at sea from in and around Mumbai are launched from the INS Shikra air station. Search and rescue operations for Pawan Hans choppers that ditched off the Mumbai coast earlier this month was carried out from here, officials said.
The Indian Navy observes December 4 as ‘Navy Day’ to commemorate the successful missile attack on Karachi during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and to salute its valiant heroes.
