Navi Mumbai: Man tries to sexually assault woman after getting in touch through matrimony sites, held

The APMC police arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly cheating women and trying to assault sexually on the pretext of marriage. Police suspect that the accused might have cheated several women in the same manner.

The accused identified as Mahesh alias Karan Manoj Gupta, a resident of Malad in Mumbai used to trap women through matrimony websites.

In January 2021, the APMC police registered a case under section 304 A and 504 of IPC for wrongful confinement and insulting a woman by abusing following a woman complained about the accused. The victim woman got in touch with him through a matrimony website and they were travelling in a cab from Vashi to Belapur when the accused tried to grope her. When the woman objected, he started abusing her. Following the incident, the woman felt very ashamed and approached the police.

According to police, the accused Gupta had worked as a data operator and also aware of mobile number hacking, it was difficult to track him. “He frequently used to change sim card and location,” said Vikas Ramgude, senior police inspector from APMC police station.

Police said that he used to trap rich and well-to-do women on matrimony websites by making fake accounts. After getting number, he used to call them in restaurant and bars and develop relationships. Later, he used to assault sexually. “He used to identify himself as a businessman to woman,” said the official.

However, last week he was arrested from Malvani in Mumbai. The accused has admitted the crime. Meanwhile, police have appealed to citizens to report if anyone was cheated by Gupta.
