Mumbai: Woman gives birth on foot-overbridge

Mumbai: A 26-year-old pregnant woman gave birth to an infant on the foot-over bridge of Nalasopara railway station on Sunday morning. According to the doctors, both mother and infant are stable and have been kept under observation at the civil hospital in Nalasopara.

A senior railway official said station superintendent attended to the pregnant woman immediately after she experienced labour pain and with the help of a doctor and two nurses the woman gave normal birth normal birth to a baby boy. “The station superintendent of Nalasopara, R K Meena, was informed by some passengers that a woman on the foot overbridge has gone into labour. Meena and other staff, showing great presence of mind, rushed to assist Reshma Begum and helped in delivering the child,” said Ravinder Bhakar, CPRO, WR.

Both the mother and child were later rushed to Nalasopara Municipal Hospital for further medical assistance. ‘‘The mother and child are both fine and keeping well,” said a senior doctor. A similar incident was reported on August 31, when a 27-year-old woman gave birth to a baby on a platform of Bhusawal railway station in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra. According to railway officials, the woman, Kanchandevi, who was traveling from Mumbai to Lucknow in Pushpak Express, started experiencing severe labour pain as soon as the train arrived at Bhusawal station in the evening.

“Watching her in great pain, other women passengers helped her out. She was taken out of the train compartment. The passengers approached a ticket checker, who immediately called a doctor from the railway hospital. However, even before she could be helped into to the lift, she delivered a baby boy on the platform,” a railway official said.
