Every monsoon, incidents of people falling in uncovered drains and manholes are recorded, this year is no different. On Saturday evening, a 25-year-old woman carrying an infant fell into an uncovered three-foot-deep drain in Palghar (west).
According to the Hindustan Times, the woman, who was carrying a five-month-old son, threw him on the road before she fell into the drain. The victim was identified as Priti Singh. The incident took place when Singh was taking her son Aarav to a paediatrician near Devisahav Road on Saturday as the boy was unwell. After Priti's husband Aditya Singh (30) parked the car at the parking lot of a building, the woman was walking to the clinic with her son in her arms that is when she fell into the open drain. Due to the rain, the drain was full of water and sewage from the building, so it couldn't be located.
Aditya rushed to Priti after he heard her cries and pulled her out of the drain. Aditya also gathered his son who was lying on the road. Priti, after the fall, suffered serious leg injuries and her five-month-old son was also hurt. After the incident, Aditya rushed both Priti and Aarav to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital at Andheri, where they are now undergoing treatment. After the incident, the open drain was covered with plywood planks so as to prevent further accidents.
Aditya told the Hindustan Times, “I blame the builder who had kept the drain open and did not place any lid on it. The Palghar Municipal Council (PMC) is also to blame for not pulling up the builder for his callous attitude. I will complain to the Palghar police as soon as my wife and child are discharged from the hospital.” After the incident, the PMC has assured that a show-cause notice will be issued to the builder for not covering the drain.
