Mumbai: Mahim police have arrested three men and a woman for outraging the modesty of a female constable and deterring a public servant from discharging duty on Friday night. The men inappropriately touched the constable while she was questioning the accused as they were smoking cannabis, while the elderly woman assaulted police to deter police from discharging duty.

According to police sources, the complainant, a lady constable attached to Mahim police, received a call for a mobile unit near the anti-chain snatching point at Mahim. After they waited for over an hour, at 7.55pm, they received a call about an unlawful activity near Vanjawadi area.

When a team including the complainant and other constables reached the spot, they saw a group of men smoking cannabis and were found with the materials used for it. The police intervened and asked them to leave. However, the matter worsened, when some accused men inappropriately touched the lady cop to flee the spot and evade arrest.

While one of the accused men held the constable forcefully, the other said, “What is your problem if we smoke cannabis?” Soon all the accused escaped from the police’s clutches. After a 10-minute chase, Hanif Dayatar (29) was caught. During the investigation, he revealed the names of his accomplices present at the spot. Soon, police arrested Mazhar Shaikh (25), Rizwan Ansari (22) and Fatma Farooqui (65). A hunt is on to nab the absconders, said a cop of Mahim police station.

A police source said after the Ansari’s arrest, in the police van, he tried to decamp with a mobile phone belonging to a constable. However, his plan was foiled and he was arrested for the crime. Mahim Police have booked the accused persons under relevant IPC sections.
