For giving passengers a safe and jerk-free travelling experience the Western Railway is all set to deploy a GPS-based oscillation monitoring system (OMS) to accurately monitor tracks.
According to Mumbai Mirror, the new system will be housed in a dedicated coach. A brand new Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coach has been pressed into service to run the system. This coach can reach speeds of up to 160 kmph, and will facilitate high-speed track testing in the Mumbai Suburban as well as other Western Railway sections.
A WR officer told the leading daily, “The Railway Board decided to introduce a GPS-based oscillation monitoring system on the Western Railway, a first of its kind for the Indian Railways, where vertical and horizontal acceleration beyond the threshold values are identified and communicated to the concerned track maintainers via SMS in real time, for remedial action.” The new system will not only mark locations accurately but can also be used at night.
