Mumbaikars woke up to cloudy skies but got some respite from rains on Sunday morning. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its 24-hour forecast has predicted light to moderate rain in city and suburbs with the possibility of occasional intense spells.

The IMD said the island city, eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded 20.78 mm, 14.22 mm and 14.76 mm rain, respectively, in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, a high tide of 3.82 metres is expected at 7.49 pm in Mumbai today. Also, a low tide of 1.98 metres is likely to occur at 1.37 pm today.

When there is a high tide during the rainy season, it becomes difficult for the flooded water to recede. Low tide helps floodwaters in the city to find an outlet to enter the seas.

Meanwhile, IMD's Santacruz observatory on Sunday recorded the maximum temperature at 32 degrees Celsius, while the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 31.2 degrees Celsius. The Santacruz observatory in the western suburbs recorded a minimum temperature of 25.6 degrees Celsius, while the Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius.

Heavy rains had lashed Mumbai and its suburbs last week as the monsoon set in over the city, inundating several low-lying areas and disrupting train and bus services.

The IMD on Friday said that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi will have to wait longer for monsoonal showers. The wind system is expected to reach the capital around the usual date of June 27, officials said.

It had said the monsoon flow pattern is likely to organize and strengthen gradually between June 26 and June 30, and the further advance to most parts of northwest India is likely during the same period. The MeT office had earlier predicted that the wind system may reach Delhi by June 15, 12 days early. Normally, the monsoon reaches Delhi by June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8.
