Mumbai: Twelve days after a 22-year-old man, Ramashankar Yadav, was stabbed to death at Kurla on March 18, crime branch police have arrested two teens, including a minor, in connection with the matter.

The arrested duo stabbed the victim four times after he refused to hand over his bag, subsequently killing him. The two teenagers have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder and common intention.

According to police, around 4.30am on March 18, Ramashankar, had left his residence in Kurla to book a ticket to his hometown Jaunpur (Uttar Pradesh), from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla.

When Ramashankar, who had come to the city to visit his ailing brother and mother, did not return, his family approached police. They learnt Ramashankar had been stabbed and left to die on the footpath by unknown persons.

Vinoba Bhave (VB) Nagar Police registered a case and began the investigation. A police officer said, given that the time of the offence was early in the morning, there was a slim chance of having any eyewitness to the crime. “There was no CCTV camera installed in the area where the crime occurred.

However, the area near the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) road was infamous for incidents like chain-snatching and robbery. After alerting police informers about the incident, we received a tip-off about two youths, Mohammad Sadique Mohammad Ali Shaikh, 19, and a teenager from Govandi having played a role in the crime,” said a police officer.

Acting on the tip-off, a police team laid a trap near Shivaji Nagar at Govandi and arrested the accused duo on Friday. During questioning, they confessed to having intercepted Ramashankar near the SCLR Road on March 18, while they were on a motorcycle.

They approached him and said police checking was under way so he should avoid taking that route. While one of the accused kept Ramashankar engaged in the conversation, the other tried to snatch his bag. However, when Yadav resisted, they got into a scuffle. Shaikh later stabbed Ramashankar with a knife and fled the spot with the bag.

Both accused were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder (section 302) and common intention (section 34). Police said, both accused were drug addicts and petty criminals, who had several cases of assault registered against them.
