Mumbai: Two minor girls, aged five and seven years, who were kidnapped from Agripada early on Thursday morning were rescued after a 12-hour-long search. Police have arrested a 19-year-old specially-abled youth, Gaurav Mahadik, who had abducted the girls by luring them with a chocolate and then roaming on the streets of south Mumbai.

The girls were safely rescued and sent for medical tests, while the youth was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for kidnapping

According to police sources, the girls, who lived with their uncle on the footpath near Baby Garden at Agripada, had got up early on Thursday morning. This family reside in a chawl, close to the garden, where the minor girls often wandered off to play.

However, on Thursday morning, around 7.30am, when the girls had gone to play near the Baby Garden signal. A few hours later, they failed to return to the spot where the family resides and this worried the girls’ guardians. They went around in search of the girls and later approached the police to register a case of kidnapping.

Agripada police immediately formed several teams and began scrutinising the CCTV camera footage of the area. One of the CCTV cameras installed near Motilal street at Mumbai Central showed a man wearing a red t-shirt had approached the girls and lured them with chocolates.

The girls were seen walking away with the man and going towards the Mumbai Central railway station. Police had registered a case of kidnapping against an unidentified man in a red t-shirt, who was seen taking the girls away.

Police said after fanning out teams to search at the railway stations and other neighbouring areas, the girls were traced on the VP Road in Charni Road, where they were wandering alone.

The police immediately rescued the girls and enquired with them, who described the teenager and said he lost track of them as he was walking ahead. The girls soon wandered off, while Mahadik went home, near NM Joshi Marg. Police have arrested Mahadik and booked him for kidnapping.
