Mumbai: TV actor held for raping, extorting money from astrologer

Mumbai: Television actor Karan Oberoi arrested by Oshiwara police on Sunday for raping and extorting money from an astrologer was on Monday sent to police custody till May 9. The astrologer accused Oberoi of taping the act and extorting money by threatening to circulate the clips. Karan has featured in daily soaps like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. According to Oshiwara police, the astrologer approached Oshiwara police on Saturday and filed a complaint against the actor. The victim met the actor first through a dating app and had been in contact since October 2016.

In her complaint, the victim alleged Oberoi raped her, promising to marry her. Taking advantage, he filmed her in a compromising position. Later, he started to extort money by threatening to make the recordings viral. “After the complaint, we arrested Oberoi on Sunday and booked him under relevant IPC sections,” said Sailesh Pasalwad, senior inspector of Oshiwara police station.  “On Monday, he was produced in a court, which sent him to police custody till Thursday,” added Pasalwad. Oberoi’s lawyers moved a bail plea and told the court the allegations were baseless. The woman first approached Oberoi through the dating app. It was the woman who was pressing Oberoi for various reasons. To extort money from him, she threatened him with dire consequences. When he refused, she registered a false case.
