Mumbai: Students appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board examinations are at risk as question paper bundles are not being unsealed in the classroom, in front of them despite repeated complaints. Teachers and parents claim this will increase the risk of paper leaks and students will have to bear the consequences, like reappearing for exams or losing marks.

Unlike in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams, where question paper bundles are unsealed in front of the students, SSC exam question paper packages are unsealed by supervisors and non-teaching staff in designated rooms at the centres. Parents claim this gives staff members an opportunity to leak question papers and circulate it among students before the examination begins.

Parents have sharply objected to this policy of the state board. Prashant Shahane, a parent, said, “If HSC papers are being opened in front of students, then why can’t SSC paper packets be unsealed in the same way? Why does the board want to risk unsealing question papers in different rooms when we are clearly witnessing increasing cases of paper leaks?” Shruti Karande, a parent, said, “If a paper is leaked, then students have to go through the stress of re-exams.

This only adds to their misery.” According to some officials of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) the policy followed for HSC papers should be followed for SSC too. A senior member of MSBSHSE, Mumbai division, said, “If any policy has worked for HSC then it should be followed for SSC too.

The board should not take any risks as most paper leaks occur due to staff members clicking photographs of question papers through their mobile phones and circulating it through apps or social media.” On the contrary, the state board revealed an across-the-board ‘no mobile phone’ policy has been initiated to avoid paper leaks.

Sharad Khandagale, secretary of MSBSHSE, Mumbai division, said, “We have strictly warned all teaching and non-teaching staff involved in the examination process to not use mobile phones. We are conducting background checks of all staff to prevent any discrepancies.”
