Many people in the city have been protesting against tree cutting for Metro projects that are coming up in Mumbai. And that’s the reason why half of the Metro projects have been delayed till now. So finally the state government has decided to sideline the Tree Authority and is considering a change in the law, where it will allow individual agencies to cut trees without taking permission from the Tree Authority.

High ranked government officials have told Mid-Day that state government is considering a change in laws which allow individual agencies to cut trees without requiring the permission of the Central Tree Authority. According to state government officials, opposition by the members of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Tree Authority have delayed several development projects, which includes Metro Rail.

According to the report in Mid-Day, the state government wants to amend the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, which will allow various planning agencies to cut trees that stand on land they own and cut the trees without the Tree Authorities permission. For instance under amended law, an agency like MMRCL will not need permission from the Tree Authority to cut trees in the notified land for Metro project.
