Bhayandar: Saddled with a daunting task of managing a huge quantum of garbage generated in the city every day, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has finally decided to act tough against those who fail to segregate dry and wet garbage at source.
After standing instructions to contractors to stop lifting unsegregated garbage, the civic administration has now decided to disconnect water supply lines of defaulters.
MBMC’s sanitation department has issued out notices to around 7,000 housing societies in the twin-city to separate wet garbage from dry into two distinct bins, this tagged with a warning of stringent action, including refusal to collect non-segregated garbage and snapping of water lines of repeat offenders.
“Before upgrading its own ill-equipped and under-staffed mechanism to lift and ferry segregated garbage, the MBMC has threatened to disconnect water supply of housing societies. Isn’t this unfair?” questioned former corporator Om Prakash Garodia.
“Apart from free distribution of garbage bins, we have been on an overdrive to spread awareness on garbage segregation. Citizens should understand the importance of segregation and comply to the rules. The MBMC has fine tuned its mechanism for an effective waste management services,” said deputy civic chief Dr. Sambhajji Panpatte.
It should be noted that the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 makes it binding upon individuals, housing societies and commercial establishments to segregate waste at source. With a minimal amount of garbage being segregated at source, hazardous plastic comprises more than 12 percent out of an average of 500 tonnes of garbage generated by the twin-city on a daily basis.
