Mumbai: Rani Baug to get a new tiger

Mumbai: Those Mumbaikars who know the postal address of old mayor’s bungalow, which is located at Shivaji Park, must now get used to redirecting their queries to mayor’s new official bungalow at Rani Baug. The bus stop known as Veer Savarkar, is referred to by old Mumbaikars as the ‘mayor’s bungalow’. Now, this too will have to be relocated to Byculla. This move has come with a lot of turmoil and heart burn for the Shiv Sena, which tried many an attempt to get a bungalow in the plush Malabar Hill.

However, the Rani Baug or popularly known as Byculla zoo was the only available premises for the first citizen. And now reluctantly, mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has begun packing his bags to move into a new home in the verdant surroundings of Veermata Jijabai Udyan or Rani Baug by Thursday next week.

Mahadeshwar has completed the formalities to leave the erstwhile mayor’s bungalow, at Shivaji Park on January 16. The sprawling, British style bungalow with a lot of stone architecture is situated overlooking the sea, has now been handed over to Shiv Sena party for constructing the Bal Thackeray Memorial Trust.

The reason for Mahadeshwar to leave the Shivaji Park bungalow at the earliest, is because Sena leaders have planned a bhoomi pujan for Thackeray memorial, on his birthday, which falls on January 23.  “The bhoomi pujan for the memorial has been planned for next week on the birthday of Balasaheb. The mayor will have to vacate his current residence before this puja,” said a civic official.

The memorial of the Sena founder will now be constructed in the basement of the Shivaji Park bungalow. The bungalow is a heritage structure and no modifications or construction is permitted, hence it has to be preserved.  The decision of moving the mayor to his new residence was taken at a meeting held at the mayor’s bungalow held on Wednesday, in the presence of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner, Ajoy Mehta and other Sena leaders.
