Mumbai : After several accidents and deaths on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation board on Wednesday decided to instal Brifen Wire Rope Safety Fence along the 95 km expressway.

The wire ropes will help hold back a vehicle which would otherwise spiral out of control, jumping and crashing into oncoming traffic from the opposite direction.

Just two days ago, seven people of a family were killed in a crash after their SUV’s tyre burst and the car crashed into the divider first and then rammed into a dumper coming from the opposite side.

The MSRDC in its board meeting also took stock of the construction of the trauma centre on the Expressway at Ozarde village. “The construction of trauma center will be completed at the earliest. Along with that we will start an air ambulance service and four Quick Response Vehicles for accident victims,” said a senior MSRDC official.

The MSRDC Board also appointed Ernst & Young for three of its crucial projects including the ambitious ‘communication super highway’ connecting Nagpur and Mumbai.

E&Y has also been appointed as consultant for the proposed six-lane tunnel between Borivali-Thane and Shil-Kalyan Road projects, the MSRDC board decided.

The 800-km expressway between sub-capital Nagpur and Mumbai is expected to bring down the travel time from 15 hours to 10 hours. The project is estimated to cost Rs 30,000 crore.

The expressway will traverse through Ghoti-Aurangabad-Amravati and touch Nagpur. The 11-km tunnel between Borivli and Thane will go under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The tunnel would connect the two points in 10 minutes where today it takes nearly an hour to traverse the 23-km distance via Ghodbunder road.

MSRDC, Maharashtra Maritime Board and JNPT signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding for the Passenger Water Transport project, the official added.
