Mumbai: Prostitution menace outside CSMT continues unabated

What could be a more embarrassing situation for both men and women stepping outside the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) after 7 PM, than female prostitutes who allegedly solicit with men on the streets?

According to female commuters, they were approached by men at night, assuming them for prostitutes and inquiring about their rates. However, MRA police revealed that so far they have taken action against 20 women for creating nuisance in public place. Around 10 female prostitutes stand outside CSMT in front of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters. The male commuters stepping outside the railway station are approached by these women to negotiate and are then escorted in a taxi to a lodge at Grant Road.

A daily commuter from CSMT told to DNA, “We are tired of this nuisance and despite police presence, the women approach men to offer their services. The situation gets embarrassing when they follow men even when denied. At times, when a family is passing by they pass lewd comments. The police should immediately take action against them”.

However, a local resident, said, “At times, men approach women and ask for their rates.” A senior police officer from MRA Marg police station said, “When we send our men to nab these prostitutes they enter the railway building. Moreover, we cannot apply stringent sections against these women and can only book them for violating the Bombay Police Act.”

Meanwhile, important to note, CSMT subway gates will be shut down for renovation work till September 10 which will be carried out by BMC A-ward. After completing the work of Gate 2 and 3, Gate 1 will be shut. In a month’s time, the work of Gate number 2 and 3 is expected to be completed. The civic body, on Friday, started taking off the polycarbonate coverings from Gate 3.
