Mumbai: Prosecution sought death, Mustafa Dossa got it, naturally

On Tuesday before the prosecution began their arguments for the sentencing they demanded before the Special TADA court, Mustafa Dossa one of the main accused in 1993, Mumbai bomb blast hearing, was seen in a deep conversation with his new lawyer Advocate Yug Mohit Chaudhary. Dossa excused himself twice to visit the restroom and seemed under the weather, frail and dragged his feet. His advocate Chaudhary even informed the court that they would be making an application for the health report on Wednesday. “My client is not keeping well, he is weak and I wish to make an application for his health report,” the counsel informed the court.

Soon the proceedings began and Dossa’s name was first that the Public Prosecutor (PP) Deepak. N. Salvi began with. Salvi began with his arguments stating few judgements that show along with the cumulative the aggrevating circumstances for the 1993 bomb blasts are important to give death sentence to the six accused. When speaking of Dossa, the prosecution said his role in the second part of the blast case, was most important and he was the main conspirator and architect of the blasts. Dossa has been also accused of arranging the finances and masterminding the blasts. “If it were not for him crime could have been averted. He played a significant role in the blasts as the main conspirator. He organised two meetings, arranged for the travel, boarding of other gang members, supervised the landing and distribution of arms, ammunition and explosives. Moreover after the blasts he ensured the destruction of evidence,” said PP Salvi.

The court had on June 16, convicted six accused, Dossa, Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan, Abu Salem, Karimulla Khan,  Riyaz Siddiqui and Tahir Merchant guilty under multiple charges. Shahnawaz his daughter had cried after the court pronounced him guilty. Shahnawaz was worried for her father as he suffered from heart ailment. “He will not return now,” Shahnawaz had said. Dossa’s daughter’s fears were right. A highly diabetic Dossa could barely walk properly and after the fact that his death was imminent in the verdict bogged him down mentally, he developed severe breathlessness and hypertension of the fear of going to the gallows. Finally at 3.00 am Dossa was shifted to the JJ Hospital and later died of a severe cardiac arrest on Wednesday afternoon.
