Mumbai: Ghatkopar police have arrested a professor who cheated three students by promising them to pass them in the reevaluation of exams and charged them between Rs40,000 and Rs60,000 each.
The accused, Sushil Shepale (26), a resident of Shahapur, worked as a professor at Jondhalekar Engineering College in Asangaon until a few months ago. While working as a professor, he approached three students, one in second year and the other two from final year engineering, who failed in his subjects.
He offered to pass them in the re-evaluation and took money. Shepale had claimed, his friend, Rahul Gawande, who is a jeweller at Thakurli, had connections in the education department,who could easily tamper with the marks.
Accordingly, Shepale asked the students to give the decided amount to Gawande, who collected the money and deposited it in the bank. A month later, when the results of the revaluation process was declared, the three students found themselves failing in the subjects, which aggravted them and they approached Shepale.
However, Shepale refused to return the money and asked them to leave him alone. After realising he could land in trouble, Shepale resigned from the college and relocated to Sangamner and was teaching at Gyanvardhini Engineering College, said police. One of the students, a Vikhroli resident, approached Ghatkopar police and registered a complaint against Shepale and Gawande for cheating him and two others.
Acting on the complaint, a police team led by senior police inspector Ankush Katkar arrested Gawande from Thakurli and Shepale from Sangamner. The duo was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating (section 420) and common intention (section 34).
