Mumbai: Seems like there is no end to the city’s pothole woes since the contractors assigned for the civic body’s controversial project of repairing city’s 1004 roads worth Rs 2,700 crore, will be using the same material that was used the previous year.
While the civic body was unable to fix the disrepair of roads caused due to heavy monsoon this year, it will carry out the repairing work of 1004 roads from October 2016 till June 2017.These 1004 roads will be repaired, re-constructed and newly constructed.
Activists say that this year’s repair work will bring no relief since the same tainted contractors implicated in the road scam will be repairing this year’s road as well.
A senior civic official on strict conditions of anonymity said, “The repair work on 192 roads has been started across the city. The contractors assigned for the repair work are using the same material (asphalt and concrete) which they used in the last repair work. We are more vigilant this time as the potholes in the city have sparked an outburst among citizens and activists. Also some of the contractors are accused in the road repair scam which is why the civic body will be more involved in this year’s repair work.”
According to the recent pothole status released by the civic body, there were 4, 599 potholes on the roads across the city out of which 4, 563 have been ‘attended’ by the corporation and 36 potholes are remaining to be repaired.
The bad condition of the roads uncovered a road scam of Rs. 352 crore in the civic body last year. However, civic officials have confirmed that the contractors will be using the same material that was used in last year’s repair work.
After the corporators from the opposition parties have threatened to pass a no confidence motion against the civic chief Ajoy Mehta, the civic body is focusing more on the roads this year, confirmed a civic official.
The Free Press Journal had previously reported that the civic body has reassigned this year’s repair work to the same tainted contractors.
