Mumbai: The Azad Maidan Police have registered a case against ride-hailing companies Uber and Rapido for allegedly operating bike taxi services in the city without the necessary permits from the Maharashtra State Government or the Regional Transport Authority.

According to the complaint filed by Sachin Atmaram Patil (49), a Motor Vehicle Inspector, both companies have been running illegal bike taxi services through their mobile applications despite not being granted licenses under the appropriate category. The complaint states that the companies have been conducting unauthorized passenger transport, collecting money from commuters, and thereby making illegal profits while defrauding the government.

The FIR was registered under Section 318(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 66, 93, 192A, 146, 193, and 197 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.

The case is being investigated by Azad Maidan Police, who confirmed that no permission has ever been granted to either company for operating bike taxis in Maharashtra. The companies are accused of promoting illegal passenger transport through their online apps and encouraging drivers to operate without licenses, thereby violating multiple transport and technology-related regulations. The investigation is ongoing.
