Mumbai: Despite changing parties, often the candidates are reluctant to change their political stance. One such incident occurred on Thursday, when a Holi party was hosted by Rangakarmi, at Shivaji Park. Locals called on the police for the loud decibel volume of the loudspeakers and DJ music, since the entire area has been declared as ‘Silent Zone’ by the Bombay High Court.

The annual holi party, organised by Rangakarmi, for Marathi cine stars was abruptly halted, even though the organisers claimed they had taken prior permission. Actor Sushant Shelar expressed his displeasure over Mumbai police’s action and claimed they had sought prior permission from the police.

Amey Khopkar, the former head of the film wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who has now joined Nationalist Congress Party stuck to his Marathi manoos ideology, saying police were disrupting their holi party. Khopkar said, “My values of a Marathi manoos will always remain, no matter which party represent.”

The police reminded them of the Bombay High Court order, which has banned the use of DJ and loudspeakers in silent zones and asked them to turn down the loudspeakers and music. After the police warning, organisers complied meekly.  Manjunath Singe, deputy commissioner of police (Operations) and Mumbai Police spokesperson stated they were following the court orders. “The event was organised in a silent zone at Shivaji Park and were using a DJ system at the party.

According to the Bombay High Court orders, DJ and loudspeakers have been banned in Maharashtra. Hence the organisers were asked to refrain from using them, their program was not stopped,” said Singe. However, the police action was not taken down well by Khopkar, who questioned it saying, the event was organised at a private property and the silent zone rules are not applicable to them.

He said, “Despite having a police permission for this party, why did police intervene? If the police are so bold, why don’t they stop the speakers on the masjids? Marathi actors too should be allowed celebrate their festival.”  Khopkar also taunted the Mumbai police for not inviting Marathi actors to any police event. “After this action, Marathi actors will think twice before attending any police events,” said Khopkar.
