Amid shortage of vaccine doses, there will be no vaccination drive at the civic and state-run centres on June 3, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
“Vaccination drive will be closed on Thursday at all government and civi-run vaccination centers that fall under the BMC’s jurisdiction due to insufficient supply of vaccines under the Covid-19 prevention vaccination campaign,” said a senior health official.
Meanwhile, nearly 50,000 were vaccinated at 344 centres across the city on Wednesday. According to the data received, 49,833 beneficiaries have taken the jab in the last 24 hours, of which 744 were students going abroad for further studies. As many as 101 lactating mothers and 39,530 beneficiaries between 18 to 44 years of age were also administered the vaccine.
Meanwhile, more stock is expected to come on June 3, following which the drive will resume.
Additional commissioner, BMC, Suresh Kakani, said, “If we are heading towards a third wave, we want to vaccinate as many people as possible. Due to the unavailability of vials, we have put restrictions on immunisation for the younger population. We will try to prioritise immunising them as soon as we get more vials.”
Meanwhile, doctors have asked those who have got their jab to refrain from dropping their guard. “Until we vaccinate everyone, the pandemic isn’t over. Until we get the vials, social distancing is the only shield we have to save ourselves from contracting the infection. We have to decide if they want a third wave or not,” said Dr. Rahul Pandit, member of the state Covid-19 taskforce.
